No hot water
The heating element or the thermostat has usually failed. Check the switch, the indicator lamp and the MCB first.
Tripping the power
If the geyser trips the MCB or the earth leakage switch, the heating element is often leaking current. Stop using it until it is checked.
Water leaking
Leaks come from loose inlet or outlet joints, a dripping safety valve, or in older heaters, a corroded tank.
Heating slowly or only lukewarm
Hard water leaves scale on the heating element, which slows heating. The thermostat setting or a partly failed element can also be the cause.
Rusty or smelly water
This usually means the protective rod inside the tank has worn out, or the tank has started to rust.
Check these before you call
These take a few minutes and sometimes solve the problem.
- Make sure the switch is on and the indicator lamp lights.
- Check that the thermostat knob, if there is one, is not turned to the lowest setting.
- Check the MCB in your distribution board.
- Make sure the inlet valve is open.
Safety: If the geyser trips the power or you feel even a slight shock from a tap, switch it off at the MCB and do not use it until it is repaired.

Why is my geyser tripping the MCB?
Most often the heating element has developed a fault and is leaking current to the body of the geyser, which trips the safety switch. That is a shock risk, so keep it switched off until it is checked.
Why does my water heater take longer to heat than before?
In hard water areas, scale builds up on the heating element and slows heating. Descaling or replacing the element usually brings it back to normal.
Is a small leak from the geyser dangerous?
A drip from the safety valve can be normal while heating, but water from the body or joints near the wiring is not. Switch off the power and call if water is near the electrical parts.
How much will the repair cost?
It depends on the fault and on any parts that need replacing. Ask for the charges when you call, before you book, and ask for the cost of the repair before any work starts.
