Drum not spinning
Often an unbalanced load, a worn drive belt, a door lock that is not engaging, or a motor fault. Many machines refuse to spin when the clothes have bunched to one side.
Water not draining
Usually a blocked drain filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a drain pump that has stopped working. Coins and hair clips are common culprits.
Water leaking
A torn door rubber, a loose or cracked inlet hose, a leaking drain hose joint, or too much detergent foaming out of the drum.
Loud noise or shaking
The machine may not be level on the floor. On a new machine, check that the transit bolts were removed. Worn drum bearings and shock absorbers also cause noise during spin.
Will not start
The door may not be fully closed, the child lock may be on, or there may be a fault in the power supply or the control board.
Water not filling
The tap may be closed or the water pressure low. The small filter where the inlet hose joins the machine can block, and the inlet valve can fail.
Check these before you call
These take a few minutes and sometimes solve the problem.
- Make sure the water tap is fully open and the plug is switched on.
- Close the door or lid firmly and check that the child lock is off.
- Check that the drain hose is not bent, squashed or pushed too far into the outlet.
- If the drum will not spin, take out a few clothes and spread the rest evenly, then try a spin-only cycle.
Safety: Switch off and unplug the machine before you open the drain filter or touch anything inside. Keep a towel ready, because water comes out of the filter.

Why does my washing machine stop before the spin cycle?
Most machines sense when the load is unbalanced and refuse to spin to protect the drum. Spread the clothes evenly or remove a heavy item and try again. If it still stops with a balanced load, the drain or the motor may have a fault.
Can I keep using the machine if it leaks a little?
It is better not to. Water near the plug and the floor is a shock and slip risk, and a small leak from a hose or door rubber usually gets worse. Turn off the tap after each wash until it is checked.

It depends on the fault and on any parts that need replacing. Ask for the charges when you call, before you book, and ask for the cost of the repair before any work starts.
