Fridge not cooling
Common causes are dust on the condenser at the back, vents blocked by packed food, a weak door seal, a fan that has stopped, a thermostat fault or a gas leak.
Freezer cold, fridge warm
In frost-free fridges this usually means ice has built up and blocked the cold air path, often because of a defrost fault or a stopped fan.
Too much ice in the freezer
A door that does not close properly lets in moist air. In frost-free models it can also mean the defrost heater, timer or sensor has failed.
Water leaking inside or under
The small drain hole at the back of the fridge can block, so defrost water overflows. A cracked drain tray also causes water on the floor.
Loud noise or clicking
A steady low hum is normal. Repeated clicking, the compressor starting and stopping every few seconds, or loud rattling points to a relay or compressor problem.
Fridge not switching on
Check the plug, socket and stabiliser first. After that, the thermostat, the relay or the control board are the usual suspects.
Check these before you call
These take a few minutes and sometimes solve the problem.
- Check that the plug and stabiliser are switched on and the light comes on when you open the door.
- Look at the temperature setting. It is easy to turn the knob to the warmest setting by mistake.
- Make sure the door closes fully and nothing on the shelves is pushing it open.
- Leave a few inches of space behind the fridge and do not block the air vents inside with food.
Safety: If you smell burning, or the compressor clicks on and off again and again, unplug the fridge and call. Running it like that can damage the compressor.

Why is my fridge not cooling but the freezer is cold?
In a frost-free fridge, cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fridge section. If ice blocks that path or the fan stops, the freezer stays cold while the fridge warms up. It usually needs the defrost system or the fan checked.
Is it worth repairing an old fridge?
It depends on the fault. Door seals, relays, thermostats and fans are usually worth repairing. A compressor or a gas leak costs more, so ask for the repair cost first and compare it with the price of a new fridge.
How long should a fridge take to cool after switching on?
Allow a few hours for the fridge section to get cold, and longer for the freezer. If it is still warm the next day, it needs checking.
How much will the repair cost?
It depends on the fault and on any parts that need replacing. Ask for the charges when you call, before you book, and ask for the cost of the repair before any work starts.
